The Blueprint of Surrender
Inspired from the How it Works chapter in the Big Book.
Introduction:
How It Works is more than just a chapter—it’s the heartbeat of recovery. It lays out the path for those seeking freedom from addiction, emphasizing honesty, willingness, and faith. It reminds us that self-will has failed us, but there is a solution—one that requires surrender, action, and a connection to a Power greater than ourselves.
The Blueprint of Surrender
If you want what we have, take heed and beware,
Half measures won’t work, they’ll lead to despair.
The key is surrender, not cunning or force,
A rigorous honesty charts the best course.
We stood at the threshold, afraid to let go,
Yet self-will had failed us, as deep down we know.
Resentment and fear, those thieves of the soul,
Kept us in darkness, refusing control.
But God, as we found Him, had been there all along,
A whisper, a presence, a love deep and strong.
We had to be willing to give Him our trust,
To clean house, make amends, and rise from the dust.
We wrote down our faults, no matter how grim,
Then shared them with someone—to God and to him.
With humility kneeling, we asked to be free,
Of selfish desires, of pride’s tyranny.
We made our amends, though trembling with fear,
For freedom and peace soon followed so near.
Then daily we sought through prayer and through thought,
A knowledge of God and the strength He had brought.
Having been changed, we carry the flame,
To those still in darkness, still lost in their shame.
For faith without works is empty and weak,
To give what was given, the lost we must seek.
So if you are willing, step forward, begin,
This path is for all—no matter your sin.
We ask you for nothing, no riches or gold,
Only the willingness to let God take hold.
