Step Two - Came to Believe
We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Step 2 of recovery asks us to believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity. For a food addict, this step can be both daunting and liberating. It's about moving from hopelessness to hope, from feeling trapped in cycles of obsession and compulsion to believing that change is possible.
This step doesn’t require us to have all the answers about what that "power greater than ourselves" might be. It only asks that we open our minds to the idea that we don't have to do this alone. Whether it’s God, the fellowship, or simply the collective wisdom of others in recovery, there’s something greater than our willpower at work.
As a food addict, I’ve seen firsthand how my best thinking got me stuck. Step 2 invites me to let go of the illusion of control and embrace the possibility of a better way. It’s a small step, but a profound one. Believing in hope, even when I don’t fully understand it, is the first glimmer of light in a long, dark tunnel.
Each day, I remind myself that this process isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress—progress made possible by trusting in something greater than my struggles. Step 2 is the foundation of that trust.
