Step One - Powerless
We admitted we were powerless over our addiction and our lives had become unmanageable.
Since this is my very first post and I am part of a 12 step program, I figured some thoughts on Step one were appropriate.
Step One in recovery from food addiction is admitting we are powerless over food and that our lives have become unmanageable. For many of us, food isn’t just fuel—it’s comfort, control, or even escape. But the truth is, the more we try to control it, the more it controls us.
Admitting powerlessness isn’t about shame or failure. It’s about honesty. It’s acknowledging that diets, willpower, and quick fixes haven’t worked. It’s recognizing that food has taken a bigger place in our lives than it ever should have.
When we take this step, we let go of the exhausting battle to control the uncontrollable. Instead, we open ourselves to the possibility of change. Step 1 isn’t about fixing everything at once; it’s simply the beginning. It’s saying, “I can’t do this alone, and that’s okay.”
Admitting powerlessness is how we begin to find freedom from the grip of food addiction—one step, one day, one meal at a time.
