Promises in Full
Inspired by the Promises found in the Big Book.
Introduction:
The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous offers a vision of freedom, healing, and transformation through the Twelve Steps. These promises are not just hopeful words—they are the lived experience of those who walk this path with honesty and willingness. This poem reflects the journey from bondage to freedom, from fear to faith, and from self-will to God’s care. If we do the work, these promises will materialize—sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly—but always in full.
Promises in Full
If we are diligent, honest, and true,
A new way of living will come into view.
We’ll know a new freedom, a peace so profound,
The weight of our past won’t keep us bound.
Regret will dissolve, no longer a chain,
We’ll see how our struggles were never in vain.
No fear of the past, nor dreading the morrow,
We’ll walk with a faith that drowns out our sorrow.
No longer controlled by the chaos inside,
God’s hand will lead us, a faithful guide.
We’ll intuitively know how to act, what to say,
And doubt will not stand in recovery’s way.
Self-seeking will slip, selfish fear will fade,
We’ll stand in the light of the progress we’ve made.
We’ll handle life’s troubles with courage anew,
For power and strength will carry us through.
Are these just dreams, too good to be true?
No—God’s grace is waiting for you.
If we do the work and humbly believe,
These promises come, as we learn to receive.
